What is stimulant use disorder?
Stimulant use disorder is the compulsive use of drugs that speed up the central nervous system, most commonly methamphetamine and cocaine (including crack), and sometimes misused prescription stimulants (NIDA). Stimulants flood the brain with dopamine, producing intense but short-lived highs that drive repeated use and powerful cravings. Over time, the brain's reward system is disrupted, making it very hard to stop without help, and use can take a serious toll on the heart, mind, and body.
That toll is real: stimulants strain the heart and blood vessels, raising the risk of high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, and stroke, while methamphetamine in particular can damage teeth, skin, and memory. Heavy use can also trigger paranoia, severe anxiety, and even stimulant-induced psychosis.
Because the most acute danger in early recovery is psychological rather than physical, having physicians and in-house psychiatry on hand isn't a luxury. It's what keeps the hardest days safe. With medical stabilization and the right behavioral care, the brain's reward system can recover, cravings fade, and energy and mood return.

The mind heals when it's supported
Stimulant recovery is as much mental as physical. With psychiatry on-site, the depression and cravings of the crash are met with real care, not a clipboard.
- In-house psychiatry
- Evidence-based therapy
- Round-the-clock support
Signs of stimulant addiction
Signs include:
- Bingeing followed by crashes
- Intense cravings
- Needing more for the same effect
- Paranoia, anxiety, or agitation
- Sleeplessness, then prolonged exhaustion
- Weight loss and neglected responsibilities
- Continuing to use despite clear harm
What stimulant withdrawal is like
Unlike alcohol or benzos, stimulant withdrawal isn't usually physically life-threatening. But it can be psychologically intense and risky. The "crash" brings extreme fatigue, depression, anxiety, vivid cravings, and sometimes suicidal thoughts. That psychological danger is exactly why medical and psychiatric supervision matters: at Regain Hope Detox and Recovery Center, you're monitored 24/7, with physicians and mental-health support to keep you safe through the hardest days. Learn more βWhen to seek help for stimulant use
Because stimulant withdrawal can trigger severe depression and suicidal thinking, doing it alone is genuinely risky. If you're bingeing and crashing, can't stop despite wanting to, or feel hopeless when you're not using, reach out now. With medical support and behavioral treatment, the brain heals and cravings fade. Recovery is very possible. If you're having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 anytime.
Stimulants and co-occurring mental health
Stimulant use is closely tied to depression, anxiety, trauma, and sometimes stimulant-induced psychosis. Treating the substance use and the mental health together is essential. Our integrated dual-diagnosis care does exactly that. Untreated, the cycle tends to deepen. The substance briefly lifts mood, then the crash drops it lower than before. Treating both at once breaks that loop, which is why integrated care consistently outperforms addressing either problem alone.
Real doctors. On-site. Every day.
Most detox centers run on a rotating staff with a physician who checks in by phone. Regain Hope Detox and Recovery Center is owned and run by two physicians who care for you in person. Here's why that changes everything.
